ADMISSION POLICY
Purpose
The purpose of the policy is to provide an insight to the admission criteria and requirements for the various courses of study and programs in the colleges, institutes and centers.
Overview
Whereas the Grand Gedeh University is committed to equality in line with the educational policy of the Republic of Liberia. The university therefore developed a policy document that is inclusive and provides for extensive participation.
This policy gives an all-embracing guideline for the University’s admissions, inclusive of the colleges, institutes and centers within the University. It is aimed at equitable, all inclusive, rational and unambiguous protocols for admissions and is applicable to all categories of student admissions, including the undergraduate and other programs for the award of certificates, diplomas and degrees.
Among other content, succinct guidelines to prospective students on admission requirements to the National Commission for Higher Education’s accredited courses and programs are provided in this policy.
SCOPE
The scope includes provision of minimum admission requirements, terms and conditions, selection process, roles and responsibilities, transfers, progression, certification, feedback, complaints and appeals related to the admission of prospective students.
INTRODUCTION
The Grand Gedeh University sticks to the policy of keeping the highest standards in the admission of students into her various programs of study. The institution appreciates that a trainable student who will become a productive graduate, useful to the Liberian society and the world at large, must be sure footed even at the point of admission into GGU. To that end, GGU does not waive the laid down admission requirements that have been set by the administration.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
The terms and conditions for admission are the implied contract contained herein for all applicants upon admission. This information is available at the Office of Admissions, Records and Registration. They are student-oriented friendly offers and are to be accepted by each student upon admission. The terms and conditions are clear, simple and based on the environment of GGU. They include but are not limited to provisional admission, physical screening and acceptance of the admission.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Grand Gedeh University is an established educational institution committed to promote knowledge and technology. The primary mission of the university is student development in a safe environment where there is equal opportunity for students. The university has designed an orderly structure to ensure a peaceful atmosphere to enable students pursue academic achievement through the administering of the matriculation oath which captures the roles and responsibilities of the students as follows:
“With my signature apprehended below, I hereby subscribe to the following oath of Matriculation, on admission to membership of the Grand Gedeh University, I solemnly and sincerely promise and declare that I will pay due respect and obedience to the President and administration of the University and that I will faithfully observe all regulations which may from time to time be issued by them for its good order and governance”
STUDENTS SELECTION PROCESS
Selection of students into the various programs is the responsibility of the University Admissions Board (UAB). The selection process will consider the prerequisite qualification of the student, which is the successful pass in the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations(WASSCE) as spelled out by the Ministry of Education.
The admission process begins with a prospective student registering and writing the entrance examination and is expected to pass the said examination. All successful candidates offered admission must submit the required documents to the Office of Admissions, Records and Registration and obtain clearance at their colleges and departments. Candidates duly cleared are to pay all school charges or fees stipulated by the University.
Registration of courses is required for all students in each academic year after payment of school charges/fees. A student shall be deemed to have voluntarily withdrawn from the University if such a student fails to register two weeks after the beginning of the session,
FRAUDULENT ADMISSION
Grand Gedeh University maintains a strict, zero-tolerance policy against fraudulent and misleading information.
The university will deny admission to any applicant suspected of providing deceptive information. Furthermore, any student who is discovered to have gained admission through fraudulent or misleading information will be required to withdraw from the university. In such cases, and where necessary, the student may be handed over to security agents for further action.
A decision to withdraw a student must always be preceded by a proper investigation conducted by a duly authorized department within the university.
STUDENT TRANSFER POLICY
Student Transfer may be permitted under the following:
Intra-College Transfer: when a student is transferring within the college, that is from one department to another in the same college in this institution.
Inter-College Transfer: when a student is transferring from one college to another college within this university.
Inter University transfer: When a student is transferring from one accredited university to GGU. This is however dependent on availability and ability to meet the criteria set by this institution.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
An international student is a student whose nationality is not Liberian, applying to this university to pursue studies. In some instances, international student will be exempted from sitting the entrance examination but must meet all the academic requirements for admission.
PROGRESSION:
The average minimum credit unit to be taken at each level is 30 while the maximum is 50. The Cumulative Grade Points Average at each level should not be less than 2.0. Students failing to reach this benchmark shall be put on probation and failure to step up subsequently will be asked to withdraw.
CGPA ranges under the four- point grading scale for classification of degrees during graduation.
CLASSIFICATION OF DEGREES
3.750-4.000-Summa Cum Laude
3.500-3.749-Magna Cum Laude
3.250-3.449-Cum Laude.
RECOGNITION
This university recognizes scholars for their exceptional academic prowess. These are students that have distinguished themselves in their different field of studies and prizes are given to them as the best graduating students in their fields during the convocation ceremony at the end of every session.
CERTIFICATION
Only students who have passed all the prescribed examinations during their course of study and have been found worthy both in character and in learning will be awarded the relevant degree and certificates issued after approval by the university administration.
